Belarus is notoriously known as “The last dictatorship in Europe”. Numerous human rights violations are taking place constantly, amongst which involuntary disappearances of the opponents of the regime. Shortly before the presidential elections in the year 2000 the following distinguished Belarusian political and public figures were subjected to involuntary disappearances:

 Ex-Minister of Internal Affairs General Yuri Zakharenko (May 7, 1999);

Vice Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Belarus Victor Gonchar (September 16, 1999);

Businessman Anatoly Krasovsky (September 16, 1999);

Journalist Dmitri Zavadsky (July 7, 2000).

According to some witnesses and documents, all of them were kidnapped and killed by the so-called “death squad”, organized and supported by the criminal Belarusian regime. The Report and Resolution of Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe of Disappeared persons in Belarus  (Doc. 10062, February 2004) concludes that steps were taken at the highest level of the State to actively cover up the true background of the disappearances, and suspects that senior officials of the State may themselves be involved in these disappearances.

“We Remember” openly condemns the government of Belarus for disappearances of political opponents of the regime, violations during the electoral process, pressure exerted on the civic society and repressions. Actions and pickets organized by “We Remember” serve now as they will do in the future as a constant reminder that the issue of enforced disappearances will never be left behind.

For over three years now in many countries of the world on the 16th of every month Solidarity Days with Belarus are organized in form of peaceful demonstrations to express support to the victims of Lukashenko’s regime in Belarus. Solidarity actions will go on till the open investigation of the cases of enforced disappearances is going to take place and till there are no human rights violations occuring in Belarus.

Please come by to support our peaceful fight for human rughts in Belarus and spread this message to people you know.

Demonstration time: Monday, March the 16th, 15:30 — 16:30
Demonstration location: Anna Paulownastraat 34, Den Haag
